Energy-efficient products according to European Union's Ecodesign Directive 2009/125/EC
The European Union's Ecodesign Directive 2009/125/EC sets mandatory ecological requirements for products running most of their usage time in stand-by mode. Examples are boilers, TVs, fridges, stoves, microwave ovens and computers. Devices being in stand-by mode are allowed to consume only 0.5 W of power, in case of on-state power less than 50 W even only 0.3 W. Only if additional functions like time or temperature are displayed, stand-by power might be up to 1 W.
Designing and offering energy saving components is one of Diotec's major targets. Examples are the LDO LDI8119EN with enable ("switch off") pin, the MM1Z4711, a Zener diode with test current of only 50 µA, the SK34SMA L217 15MQ040N, a Schottky diode offering both low reverse leakage and low forward voltage, or the Superfast Efficient Rectifier ES1G - speaking for itself.
Model Railways Performing Almost Close to Reality
In 1862, the British company Myers offered steam locomotive models in its catalogue for the first time. Later on, electrically driven types entered children bedrooms, starting and stopping in a quite rough, "unnatural" way. Nowadays, even whole families spend afternoons with the small, detailed coloured model railways, which are fully digital controlled. This allows behaviours extremely close to reality, in terms of realistic, "slow" acceleration and deceleration.
Thanks to miniaturized SMD components like Diotec's bridge rectifier MYS80, the superfast diode EGL1D and dual MOSFET MMBT7002DW, such digital drives can be built even on the smallest scale. The MYS80 measures just 3 mm x 3 mm and offers anyway an output current of up to 500 mA at maximum 80 Vrms input voltage. An ideal free-wheeling diode for the PWM controlled DC drive is the EGL1D with 1 A, 200 V and t_rr < 50 ns. Two MOSFETs in a single SOT-363 package allow to build a halfbridge at smallest board space requirement. The MMBT7002DW offers 60 V of Drain to Source voltage, a peak drain current of 800 mA, maximum R_DSon of 7.5 Ohm and allow for control by digital/logic level drivers.

Reverse Polarity Protection for Railway On-Board Supplies
Railway coaches are equipped with battery systems buffering the quite unstable power supply system, fed from the overhead contact line or from the diesel rail car. In case of a blackout, they keep supplying the lighting, air condition but also safety systems like door openers or similar. Like in automotive circuits, the electronic loads connected to such on-board supplies must be protected against accidentally happening reverse polarity, e. g. during maintenance or exchange of the battery.
Axial lead devices like the 10A/1000V diode P1000M are often the first choice since they can be welded or crimped directly into a cable connection. Higher power ratings are allowed by the 20A/1000V device P2000MTL or even by the 25A/1300…2000V type P2500Y.
NEW Application Note: How to Prolong Battery Lifetime
One way to make the battery system efficient is minimizing the energy usage while the system is runing or is in standby-mode. This can be realized by limiting the current drawn by the system from the battery. Thanks to Diotec's new LDO Voltage regulators LDI8119EN and LDI8233EN with Enable-function it is possible to switch-off the system, thus the input current will be limited usually up to 1.0 µA.
This simple solution will boost the efficiency of the battery system and prolong battery life. Due to the shutdown current of 0.4 µA - 1.0 µA the LDI8119EN and LDI8233EN are suitable in all battery management applications. Please refer to our Application Note for more detailed information.
LDO Voltage Regulator with Enable Function and Low Iq
LDO Voltage Regulator with Enable Function and low Iq
The Enable input (EN), available in positive and negative logic, turns the device on and off by an external signal. Active-high logic activates the device when the voltage at the EN-input exceeds the high-logic threshold. The active-low logic switches the device off when the EN-voltage falls below the logic low threshold. The EN-function is an import- ant feature when sequencing power supplies in multi-rail systems.
When the LDO is turned off and connected to the battery system, the input current will be limited, usually up to 1 µA. This Shutdown current is commonly confused with the quiescent current which is the current drawn by the device when it is enabled and opera- ting with no load. Both shutdown and quiescent current are important parameters when realizing long battery lifetimes in portable devices.
Diodes à la Carte: The BAV99 in Different Varieties
The BAV99 is a widely used small signal device in dual diode configuration. Its two diodes in series can be used for any kind of signal processing, and two parts can even form a bridge for high speed full wave rectifying. As different as the applications are the requirements on such device: High volume consumer devices require only low voltage levels, but especially low BOM costs. Industrial applications need higher power and voltage ratings, e. g. at 24 V industrial control units. Battery powered electronics must be operated with lowest possible leakage currents to allow for long stand-by times. In addition, parts might need full AEC-Q101 qualification, in case of automotive use.
Like choosing your favourite meal from a menu card, Diotec offers the BAV99 series from now on in different varieties, perfectly matching your particular needs:
* The BAV99-C in commercial grade, rather cost attractive and offering 70 V / 2.5 µA / 225 mW
* The industrial grade BAV99, having 85 V / 1 µA / 350 mW
* The AEC-Q101 qualified BAV99-AQ, again with 85 V / 1 µA / 350 mW
* The "high end" voltage version BAV99L, with 100 V / 1 µA / 350 mW
* The "low leakage" varieties BAV199 and BAV199-AQ, offering 85 V / 5 nA / 350 mW
Any wishes still open? This is just the beginning of further product series offering different parameters but also gradings, from commercial via industrial to AEC-Q101 qualified. We will keep you informed!
Happy Cows Served by Feeding Robots
Modern freestall barns allow cows to move around almost freely. Only when it comes to feeding, they move to their dedicated eating slot. Now the farmer must be fast, since the cattle wait impatiently. Feeding robots can take off the farmer from this boring but important job, required several times a day. It allows him to spend more time on other, more interesting items. When the robot has finished the job, it returns to the charging station where it gets recharged for the next feeding mission.
Diotec's SK36SMA, respectively SK36SMA-3G are 60V Schottky rectifiers in SMA offering a forward voltage drop of < 0.7V or even 0.55V (-3G) at 3A and are used in battery charging stations for feeding robots and others. These devices ensure a fast and reliable charging, and keep - in this particular case - the cows happy!

Design Idea Dimmable LED Driver Circuit
Design-Idea: Dimmable LED Driver Circuit
Current Limiting Diodes (CLD), also known as Constant Current Regulators (CCR), can be used to drive LED strips used in modern lighting systems. They can be easily switched in parallel in order to achieve any driving current required for the used LED type. Their disadvantage is temperature dependency of regulation current, as well as inability to provide a dimming functionality. There is a wide variety of LED driving ICs available, using pulse width modulation (PWM) for dimming LED lamps. Switching frequency is high enough to avoid any flickering of the lamps. Dimming level is either taken from the traditional phase-angle-controlled mains, or from analogue/digital signals provided from smart home systems.

The SBCT30150 Schottky Diode for the Fast Charging of Power Tools
Whenever you want to repair something or, for instance, hang up shelves and small cabinets, power tools are useful assistants. Nowadays, most of them are battery-powered.
Dual Schottky diodes with common cathode are typically used as output rectifiers in forward converters, the usual circuit of fast battery chargers. Diotec’s SBCT30150 offering an I_FAV of 2 x 15 A and a V_RRM of 150 V is ideally suited for the established 18 V systems. This dual Schottky comes in the TO-220AB case outline and provides a low thermal resistance for good heat dissipation.
