Renewable Energy Aboard - With Diotec's UGB16JCD2
Modern boats and yachts are equipped with solar panels, which charge the on-board battery system whenever there is a bright day across the sea. Instead of starting the combustion engine from time to time in order to keep that battery charged, this concept of using renewable energy is clean, quiet, energy saving and thus a good contribution to preserve the natural life of our oceans.
The typical output voltage of solar panels of about 40 V stays within the range of safety extra-low voltage (SELV); push-pull converter topologies can set it down to the battery level of 12 or 24 V. Especially the higher battery level of 24 V requires output rectifiers with a reverse voltage of 400, better 600 V. The reason is the high switching frequency of the input stage, which can cause voltage spikes of several times the 24 V_DC output. High switching frequencies further call for superfast recovery diodes, and the push-pull topology for dual rectifiers with common cathode.
This is fully fulfilled by Diotec's UGB16JCD2, a 2 x 8 A superfast recovery rectifier in common cathode configuration. Its reverse recovery time of less than 35 ns reduces switching losses significantly, while the reverse voltage of 600 V offers a comfortable safety margin. These positive features are rounded off by the D²PAK case outline, allowing for automatic PCB assembly and good thermal dissipation.

Calm Sea? No Problem for Full Electric Motor Sailboats
Sailing boats are not only for fun, sports and leisure: New concepts try to use wind energy even for cargo ships. It might still take some time until these environment-friendly vessels are ready, but good to see that such concepts are considered and tried out. No matter if it is a small yacht or a still to be developed cargo ship: An auxiliary engine is mandatory for sailing boats, not only when the sea is calm, but also to leave and enter the port. Full electric motor drives are already available for smaller ships. Advantages over the traditional combustion engines are as follows: They are quiet, emission-free and easy to start.
Diotec's new Dual Power MOSFET DI028N10PQ2-AQ offers a space saving solution for electric auxiliary motor drives. It contains two N channel types in a single PowerQFN5x6 package. Both with 100 V of Drain-Source voltage, 28 A of continuous Drain current and logic level Gate drive capability.
Two such parts in a H-bridge configuration are already enough to drive a brushed DC motor with adjustable speed and reversal of propulsion. Just three parts are enough to form a three-phase bridge capable for driving brushless DC motors (BLDC). The on-state resistance of typical 15 mOhm at 10 V Gate-Source voltage or maximum 26 mOhm at 4.5 V helps to save energy and therefore prolongs the runtime of the drive.

Safe Communication Offshore
A long time ago, a ship offshore was totally disconnected from the rest of the world. Short distances could be spanned by optical signals like flags, mirrored sunlight or flare, but required clear view. The world's first radio transmission at all (and from an island!) was done by Guglielmo Marconi 1897, using a spark-gap transmitter. The principle of that set-up was detected just few years ago, 1887 by Heinrich Hertz: An electric spark creates radio waves which spread into the air.
The still used German term "Funkübertragung" for radio transmission stems from that spark-gap effect. In 1901, Marconi managed already to send a message across the Atlantic ocean - this was the start for successful marine communications.
Even small boats use nowadays maritime radio systems, supplied by the onboard 12 or 24 V battery system. Like in a car supply, the disconnection of the battery (also called load dump) can cause voltage spikes exceeding easily 100 V. At sea there is further the risk of lightning strikes hitting the radio antenna.
Transient Voltage Suppressor diodes (TVS) are therefore used to protect the sensitive onboard electronics. The P4SMAJ30CA-AQ is a typical TVS used in the second level of protection, that means at the interfaces of an electronic circuit, in addition to centralized load dump protectors and lightning arresters. It offers 30 V of working voltage, well above the 28 Volt of a fully charged 24 V battery, and 400 W of peak pulse power at the typical lightning pulse 10/1000 µs.
