The ESD9BL0522P by Diotec comes in the tiny, "leadless" SOD-882/DFN1006 package. It measures only 1.0 mm by 0.6 mm at no extended leads, but terminals fully integrated on the bottom package side. Parts offer anyway a comfortable ESD surge capability of 20 kV (air discharge) respectively 15 kV (contact discharge) according to IEC 61000-4-2.

Due to their very low junction capacity of 0.4 pF only, they are well suited for high frequency data lines and interfaces. The stand-off voltage of 5V covers a wide range of signal levels, and clamping voltage of 12 V at 1 A and 8/20 µs surges helps to protect sensitive electronic circuits.

Application Note Automotive Load Dump Protection

Though the main power train of electrical vehicles use a high voltage battery, all these cars have still the traditional 12 V battery on board. Reason is that most electronic and electrical systems in a car - lights, screen-wiper, infotainment etc. - are made for that voltage level. This battery is further used for the switch to connect and disconnect the high voltage system when the car is started or stopped. As such, EVs can jump start cars using a combustion engine - and also vice versa!

At that procedure, load dump protection becomes important. A load dump transient is the voltage surge generated when the battery is disconnected while the alternator is connected. This typically happens if a discharged car battery is powered up by a second one and afterwards jump leads are removed. The peak voltage of this surge may be as high as 120 V and the surge may take up to 400 ms to decay. It is typically clamped to 40 V in 12 V vehicles (cars) and about 60 V in 24 V systems (trucks).

Diotec's new application note "Automotive Load Dump Protection" describes suitable TVS diodes for surges according to "Test A" (elements for centralized suppression) as well as "Test B" (distributed protection of on-board electronics), all described in the standard ISO16750-2.

High Temperature / High Voltage Schottky Diodes for Industrial and Automotive Applications

The MBRS20200CT and MBR20200CT from Diotec are high temperature Schottky diodes featuring a very low reverse leakage current. Parts are offered in both D²PAK (S) and TO-220AB containing two diodes in common cathode configuration. They feature an average forward current rating of 2 x 10 A and Vrrm of 200 V. These devices are optimized for high temperature operation in industrial and automotive applications, requiring a maximum junction temperature of 175°C.

Applications include switch mode power supplies and battery chargers, where high frequency operation comes along with voltage outputs of 24 V or even 48 V. Parallel operation for high current outputs is possible when parts are assembled tightly on the same heatsink. The very low leakage current of each part ensures high stability against thermal runaway, compared to conventional 150°C Schottky barrier diodes. And their low forward voltage drop enables low power losses and thus high efficiency operation.

When it comes to power bridge rectifiers, design engineers have to go back to through-hole devices which first need to be soldered onto the PCB, and then screwed to an extra heat-sink. These are manual assembly steps, which cost time and effort and also bear the risk of potential failures.

Other power semiconductors such as MOSFETs or IGBTs and diodes for the PFC, converter and inverter stage or brake chopper, are widely available in SMD outlines like the well known D²PAK. They can be assembled fully automatic by pick&place machines and afterwards solder process, at high speed and with constant quality.

The S16MSD2 half bridge closes the gap which was up to now at the input rectifier stage. Two of these parts form a full bridge, which can be assembled in the same process step than the other power semiconductors. Like for those, cooling is done via the PCB metallization. So the entire power stage can be done in one time and with the same concept.
