Application Note OBC: On-board charger for electric vehicles (EV)
An on-board charger for electric vehicle is a device which is integrated into the vehicle and is responsible for charging the battery pack, whenever no charging station or
wall-box is available. It typically operates on AC power and converts it to DC power to charge the battery. The charger can be either built into the vehicle itself or added as an aftermarket accessory. The voltage and power range of an on-board charger can vary depending on the specific brand and model of the electric vehicle. However, most on-board chargers for EVs operate on a voltage range of 100-240 volts AC and have a power output range of 3-11 kilowatts (kW).
The latest application note "OBC" by Diotec introduces suitable devices for these appliations.
Battery Management Systems (BMS)
The BMS ensures the safety, longevity, and optimal performance of the battery in the e-vehicle. It helps extend the electric range to 500 kilometers and beyond in modern vehicles. This means that many vacation areas in Italy can already be reached without charging from southern Germany. Typically, the BMS consists of a battery management unit (BMU), sensors, a power stage, and a battery disconnect unit (BDU). The BMU monitors the battery's voltage, current, temperature, and state of charge, while the sensors provide data to the BMU. It also controls the charging process, either through a high-power DC connection or the on-board charger (OBC). The BDU disconnects the high-voltage battery from the vehicle when it is not in use. Diotec's latest application note addresses discrete semiconductor solutions for BMS, such as power MOSFETs, load dump protection, TVS diodes, Schottky, Zener, ESD diodes, and voltage regulators.

Silicon Carbide Schottky Diode SICW20C120 for Solar Inverter
Summer is the perfect season to make the most of the power of the sun. Not only our immune system is activated, photovoltaic systems are also in top form - just like the PV systems on the roofs of the Diotec headquarters in Germany. Silicon carbide Schottky diodes, like the SICW20C120 can reduce losses in the solar inverter.
Solar inverters convert the direct current (DC), generated by solar panels, into alternating current (AC). The power electronics switch high voltages at very high frequencies; the switching losses in the required freewheeling diodes and IGBTs become dominant here. Schottky diodes based on silicon carbide (SiC) can be designed for very high blocking voltages. They offer a reverse recovery time of almost zero (more correctly one would have to speak of the capacitive discharge time). This leads to significantly reduced switching losses, both in the diode itself and in the IGBT. The SICW20C120, from Diotec is a 2x 10 A / 1200 V SiC Schottky diode in a TO-247 package. Their capacitive storage charge is typically only 41 nC, which ensures the desired fast switching time and thus a reduction in switching losses.

Power MOSFET DI100N10PQ in E-Bike Drives
Especially for summertime, more and more people are switching to e-bikes as an environmentally friendly alternative to the car, both for commuting to work and for leisure. In Germany alone, 2.2 million e-bikes were sold in 2022. The Power MOSFET DI100N10PQ from Diotec is used in the drive of high-performance e-bikes.
The success of the e-bike is essentially based on the development of lithium-ion batteries. The most powerful motors would hardly be of interest if the battery would not provide the system with important energy over many kilometers. An advanced e-biker needs a drive with around 300 to 400 watts and a torque of up to 85 Nm. Diotec's latest power MOSFETs DI100N10PQ, are the perfect solution for controlling the brushless DC motors used here. They offer a drain current of up to 100 A at a drain-source voltage of 100 V. The RDS(on) of only 4.5 mΩ ensures low losses and thus a longer battery life. And the QFN5x6 package guarantees that the six components used per drive take up very little space.

Silicon Carbide Schottky Roadmap
Parts for high switching frequencies and voltages
Silicon Carbide Schottky diodes feature a high reverse voltage (650 V ... 1200 V) combined with an extremely low "reverse recovery" better say capacitive charge and thus discharging time. That makes these parts ideally suited for all applications, where high voltage levels are switched at very high frequencies. Typical applications include charging systems for electric vehicles (EV), solar inverters or telecom power supplies.
Diotec - At PCIM Europe for over 20 Years
Diotec is not only celebrating its 50th anniversary this year, but also 20 years as an exhibitor at PCIM Europe under the management of Mesago Messe Frankfurt. In fact, Diotec has had a booth at PCIM in Nuremberg, the leading international trade fair for power electronics, since 1982.
Our trade fair design was of course all about "50 years of Diotec". The golden 50 was, as on our Selection Guides, also very present on the booth. The fair offered us an excellent opportunity to present our latest innovations such as our silicon carbide diodes to a wide audience.
A particular highlight of the fair is the opportunity to meet our existing customers face-to-face and exchange ideas with them about their experiences with our products. It was exciting to hear how our solutions help to optimise their processes and increase their efficiency. At the same time, we were able to convince new potential customers of the benefits of our products and make promising business contacts.
A big thank you to all visitors, customers, colleagues, business partners and friends who made this year's PCIM Europe such a success. Your interest in our products and your trust in our company is our motivation.
We look forward to more exciting projects and the opportunity to further expand our partnerships. If you have any questions about our products, please do not hesitate to contact us: https://diotec.com/en/headquarters.html
Did you know that the First Robotic Mower Came onto the Market Back in 1995?
It's hard to imagine many gardens without them: robotic mowers that whisper quietly as they roll across the lawn, keeping the grass nice and short. These intelligent, self-propelled devices have triggered a veritable revolution in lawn care in recent years. They take over the task of mowing the lawn fully automatically and allow us to keep our garden in perfect condition without having to lift a finger ourselves. And in the process, they save us a whole lot of time that we can use for other things.
In 1994, the Swedish company Husqvarna landed a coup with a small sensation: they had developed the first fully automatic lawn robot. Inspired by grazing animals in nature, the principle is to mow the lawn more often, but only in small steps. In 1995, the model went on sale for 5,500 DM (2,812 EUR).
Modern robotic mowers depend on reliable ESD protection to function trouble-free. Diotec's ESDALC208 in SOT-26 housing is an ESD protection diode that simultaneously protects four data lines. It is rated for ±15 kV/±8 kV according to IEC 61000-4-2 for air/contact discharge. In addition to use in robotic mowers, the ESDALC208 is ideal for portable electronics in industrial applications, remote controls for opening garage doors and smart home sensors for controlling lights, shutters or heating and air conditioning systems.

Everything in Lush Green – Diotec's Power MOSFET DI114N06PQ in Use with the Hedge Trimmer
Finally they are here again, the sunny days. Here in Germany at the headquarters of Diotec, everything is in bloom and showing itself in lush green, including the hedges in the home garden. When it comes to maintaining hedges, shrubs and bushes, the electric hedge trimmer is an extremely useful tool. With its help, cutting and trimming plants becomes child's play.
The use of hedge trimmers goes back a long way in history. As early as ancient Egypt and Roman times, simple scissors or sickles were used to trim hedges and plants. The development of hedge clippers, in turn, was significantly influenced by the art of topiary. Topiary refers to the artistic design of hedges and shrubs in geometric shapes or figures. The art of Topiary has influenced the demand for specialised hedge trimmers and precise cutting techniques.
Our N-Channel Power MOSFET DI114N06PQ is ideal for motor control in power tools such as hedge trimmers. At a nominal 114 A and 60 V, it features low on-resistance, fast switching times and very low thermal resistance. The standard threshold voltage prevents incorrect switching on, which is particularly important for cordless power tools. Besides power tools, Diotec's Power MOSFET DI114N06PQ is suitable for all kinds of industrial applications, including DC-DC converters, synchronous rectifiers, power tools and much more.
