Renewable Energy Aboard - With Diotec's UGB16JCD2

Modern boats and yachts are equipped with solar panels, which charge the on-board battery system whenever there is a bright day across the sea. Instead of starting the combustion engine from time to time in order to keep that battery charged, this concept of using renewable energy is clean, quiet, energy saving and thus a good contribution to preserve the natural life of our oceans.
The typical output voltage of solar panels of about 40 V stays within the range of safety extra-low voltage (SELV); push-pull converter topologies can set it down to the battery level of 12 or 24 V. Especially the higher battery level of 24 V requires output rectifiers with a reverse voltage of 400, better 600 V. The reason is the high switching frequency of the input stage, which can cause voltage spikes of several times the 24 V_DC output. High switching frequencies further call for superfast recovery diodes, and the push-pull topology for dual rectifiers with common cathode.
This is fully fulfilled by Diotec's UGB16JCD2, a 2 x 8 A superfast recovery rectifier in common cathode configuration. Its reverse recovery time of less than 35 ns reduces switching losses significantly, while the reverse voltage of 600 V offers a comfortable safety margin. These positive features are rounded off by the D²PAK case outline, allowing for automatic PCB assembly and good thermal dissipation.
